Ramon Ribera Fumaz

I am a professor of Economic and Urban Geography at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) and group leader of the Urban Transformation and Global Change Laboratory (TURBA) at the university’s Internet Interdisciplinary Institute. My research career has been focused on exploring the (urban) geographies of capitalism from an interdisciplinary perspective, mainly focusing on the spatial, technological and cultural dimensions of uneven development, mostly through inquiring about the rise and crisis of the neoliberal state restructuring and rescaling in Europe, and the emergence of Smart urbanism as a spatial-fix for digital capitalism. Currently, my interests focus on the political economic geographies of global urbanism, particularly the political economy of digital urbanism, on the one hand, and the sustainability of digital economy and governance, on the other hand. Prior to joining UOC, I was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies at Lancaster University and did a PhD in Geography, and MA in Economy, Society and Space, both at the University of Manchester and a BSc in economics, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
